Why I Don’t Do Black Friday (and What I Do Instead)

Black Friday isn’t really my thing. For me, the scramble of discounts, the rush to buy, and the pressure to sell in bulk doesn’t fit with the ethos of my business - creating jewellery that’s handmade, thoughtful, and meaningful.

Instead, I focus on giving back. For Black Friday weekend, I release my Special Workshop Original where the whole profit goes to my chosen Charity, this year it is The Red Cross.

I also donate 10% of all profits from sales made over the Black Friday weekend to my chosen charity. It’s my way to make this busy shopping weekend about something more important than just bargains.

Why I’m Anti-Black Friday

In a world that often celebrates speed and mass consumption, I prefer to keep things slow and intentional. My jewellery isn’t about competing with cheap trends or fleeting deals, it’s about pieces that bring joy, are worn and cherished, and that have a story behind them.

By avoiding traditional Black Friday promotions, I can:

  • Keep the focus on ethical, handmade jewellery.
  • Encourage slow gifting, where thoughtfulness matters more than the price tag.
  • Support causes that make a difference, giving your purchase extra meaning.

When you buy from me during this weekend, you’re not just gifting jewellery — you’re also contributing to a cause, turning your present into something truly special.

What I Do Instead

Instead of sales and discounts, I focus on impact:

1. Workshop Original for Black Friday
Every year, I launch my Workshop Original piece on Black Friday. These are versatile, timeless pieces that suit every style and occasion, mean you get something that is going to last a lot longer than the Christmas season. You get a jewellery gift that’s handmade and meaningful, while also helping a charity close to my heart.

2. Charity Contributions
For this weekend only, 10% of profits from all sales will go directly to my chosen charity. It’s my way of giving back, so your purchase does double the good — jewellery that delights, and support for a cause that matters.

3. Thoughtful Gifting All Season
Even if you’re not shopping for Black Friday, I still encourage slow gifting. All my pieces, whether its personalised rings, delicate necklaces, or classic studs make meaningful gifts that last beyond the festive season, at thats an ethos that will never change at Louy Magroos.

What Is Workshop Original?

If you’re new around here, Workshop Original is my way of celebrating slow design and creativity. A few times a year, I carve out time in the workshop to create something completely unique — small-batch, one-off pieces, or limited runs that capture the spirit of handmade jewellery.

They’re not part of my permanent collection, and they often come from a spark of inspiration or a design experiment that’s too lovely not to share. Each one is made in my workshop with the same care, detail, and intention that runs through all my pieces.

Over the years, Workshop Originals have included everything from statement necklaces and gemstone set bangles, to hand carved gold pendants and necklaces made completely from my scrap pot. Whatever the piece might be, the designs always feel personal, creative, and full of heart.

This year, I’m launching my latest Workshop Original on Black Friday weekend — and, as always, 10% of profits from that collection will go directly to charity. If you would like to be first in line to see it, you need to be on my Newsletter list, so sign up here today.
