Pearls have long been a symbol of elegance, calm, and timeless beauty — and whether you're drawn to their classic charm or a more modern, contemporary style, they deserve a little extra love and care to keep them looking their best.
Pearls take time to grow, so let’s give them the respect they deserve — slow down, and take your time caring for them. It’s not complicated, I promise!
If you're wondering how to clean pearl jewellery or how to store pearl earrings safely, you’re in the right place. Here's my go-to pearl jewellery care guide, based on over a decade of making (and wearing) handmade modern pearl jewellery.
Why Pearls Need a Bit of Extra Care
Unlike gemstones or metals, pearls are organic. That means they’re softer, more porous, and a little more delicate — with a smooth surface that can be scratched or damaged by harsh chemicals, rough fabrics, or even too much cleaning.
But don’t worry — with just a few easy habits, your pearl pieces can stay looking beautiful for years to come.
How to Clean Pearl Jewellery (Gently!)
You don’t need anything fancy to clean modern pearl jewellery — just patience and a soft touch.
Here’s how I clean mine:
- Use a soft, lint-free dry cloth. I include a polishing cloth with every order, so keep it somewhere safe with your pearls.
- Gently wipe each pearl to remove residue from skin oils, makeup, or perfume.
- Only use a lightly damp cloth when absolutely needed. Pearls are porous and absorb liquids, which can damage the setting.
- Let them air dry fully before storing.
What to avoid:
❌ Soaking your pearls — no bathing, showering, or hand-washing while wearing them. Pretend you’re royalty: wear them, enjoy them, then gently remove them when you’re done.
❌ Silver dip or jewellery cleaners — not even a quick dip!
❌ Ultrasonic cleaners — way too harsh. Just no.
Everyday Tips to Keep Your Pearls Happy
Here’s how to make pearl care part of your daily routine:
- Last on, first off: Always put your pearl jewellery on after moisturiser, perfume, or hairspray — and take it off before bed. Did I mention they’re porous? You don’t want them soaking up your hand cream!
- Keep them dry: Pearls may grow in water, but they don’t love it once they’re jewellery. Avoid showers, pools, or washing up with them on.
- Handle with care: Try not to tug or twist pearl rings or earrings, especially if they’re handmade.
How to Store Pearl Earrings and Rings
Proper storage helps prevent scratches and keeps your pearls looking their best.
- Keep them in a soft pouch or fabric-lined jewellery box — stored separately from harder pieces like silver chains or chunky rings.
- If you can, lay earrings and necklaces flat — never hang them — to avoid stretching any silk thread (especially on beaded styles).
Bonus tip: If you’re gifting pearl jewellery, I always include a little care card with your order to help the lucky recipient look after their new piece
Modern Pearl Jewellery Made to Be Worn
Caring for pearls might sound a little delicate, but they’re stronger than you think — and they’re made to be worn, loved, and enjoyed. With the right care, they’ll be with you for years and years (there’s a reason they’re a staple in so many jewellery boxes!).
Each pearl piece in my collection is handmade to be wearable, tactile, and just a little bit different — from sculptural stacking rings and tiny everyday studs to bold oxidised earrings and timeless gold pendants.
